L’année 2026 marquera les 50 ans du Centre de Montchardon Karma Migyur Ling. Ce cinquantenaire célèbre précisément l’année de l’arrivée de Lama Teunsang à Montchardon, en novembre 1976. La propriété avait été achetée par Jean-Pierre Schnetzler au printemps 1975, mais rien ne s’était encore passé durant cette année-là et l’activité du Dharma dans le centre a réellement débuté en 1976.
Un demi-siècle s’est déjà écoulé depuis l’arrivée du Dharma à Montchardon… et que d’évènements se sont passés depuis !
Cette histoire est avant tout spirituelle, mais elle est aussi profondément humaine, faite de défis concrets et d’ingéniosité. Au cœur de tout cela, Lama Teunsang fut l’âme et le moteur inlassable. C’est une volonté collective, portée par la confiance et un enthousiasme partagé, qui a permis de faire de Montchardon un lieu du Dharma utile à tous.
Il y a dans cette histoire quelque chose qui tient du miracle : comment un lieu aussi inhospitalier qu’était Montchardon à ses débuts a-t-il pu devenir le centre que nous connaissons aujourd’hui ? Comment le Dharma, cette connaissance spirituelle venue d’Asie, a-t-il pu toucher nos concitoyens, être peu à peu compris et s’enraciner ici, et plus largement en France et en Europe ? Et comment Lama Teunsang, venu d’un Tibet lointain et médiéval, ne parlant pas un mot de français, a-t-il su, par son énergie extraordinaire et son enthousiasme inépuisable, mobiliser des générations de résidents, de bénévoles et de disciples pour construire ce lieu et y établir le Dharma ?
Toute cette aventure n’aurait jamais eu lieu sans la présence de son fondateur, Jean-Pierre Schnetzler, qui a eu le souhait, la générosité et l’audace folle d’établir en France un lieu dédié à la pratique du Dharma du Bouddha.
Cette histoire est celle d’une rencontre entre des hommes remarquables, de la convergence entre le souhait de Jean-Pierre, la vision du 16e Karmapa que l’Occident était mûr pour recevoir le Dharma, et l’inspiration de Kalou Rinpoché envoyé par le 16e Karmapa. C’est de ce « Tendrel, » cette conjonction auspicieuse de causes et de conditions, et de la venue de Lama Teunsang, que Karma Migyur Ling a pu naître.
C’est cette fabuleuse aventure, qui a débuté dans une pauvre ferme dauphinoise à moitié délabrée pour donner ce que nous connaissons du centre aujourd’hui, que nous vous proposons de relater progressivement durant cette année, en publiant régulièrement sur le site du centre de nouveaux épisodes.

Karma Migyur Ling – 50 Years of History
The year 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the Montchardon Karma Migyur Ling Center. This anniversary celebrates the year Lama Teunsang arrived at Montchardon, in November 1976. The property had been purchased by Jean-Pierre Schnetzler in spring 1975, but nothing really happened that year, and Dharma activity at the center truly began in 1976.
Fifty years have already passed since the Dharma arrived at Montchardon… and so many things have happened since then!
This story is, above all, a spiritual one, but it is also deeply human, full of real challenges and resourcefulness. At the heart of it all, Lama Teunsang was the soul and the tireless driving force. It was a shared determination, built on trust and common enthusiasm, that made Montchardon a place of Dharma useful to all.
There is something almost miraculous in this story: how could a place as inhospitable as Montchardon once was become the center we know today? How could the Dharma, this spiritual knowledge from Asia, reach our fellow citizens, gradually be understood, and take root here, and more broadly in France and Europe? And how did Lama Teunsang, coming from a distant, medieval Tibet, not speaking a word of French, manage, through his extraordinary energy and endless enthusiasm, to bring together generations of residents, volunteers and disciples to build this place and establish the Dharma here?
None of this adventure would have happened without its founder, Jean-Pierre Schnetzler, who had the wish, the generosity, and the wild audacity to establish a place in France dedicated to the practice of the Buddha’s Dharma. This story is one of a meeting between remarkable men, a convergence between Jean-Pierre’s wish, the 16th Karmapa’s vision that the West was ready to receive the Dharma, and the inspiration of Kalou Rinpoché, sent by the 16th Karmapa. It is from this « Tendrel, » this auspicious coming-together of causes and conditions, and from the arrival of Lama Teunsang, that Karma Migyur Ling was born.
This is the wonderful adventure, which began in a shabby, neglected farmhouse in the Dauphiné region and somehow transformed it into the center we know today. We invite you to follow it step by step throughout this year, as we regularly publish new episodes on the center’s website.
