English Version
Karma Migyur Ling is resuming the 100 Nyung Ne retreat this year. It will begin on October 22 and will run continuously until May 10, 2023. It will be conducted entirely by Lama Sangpo in the new Nyung Ne temple which is now completed.
What is Nyung Ne
Nyung Ne is a practice of Chenrezi, the embodiment of the Buddhas’ love and compassion. This practice combines all aspects of the Dharma, as well as the essence of the three vehicles: observance of the vows of ethical conduct, training in the Bodhisattva Mind of Enlightenment (development of love and compassion), and the application of the skillful and profound means of Vajrayana including mantra recitation and visualizations. Among the many representations of Chenrezig, this practice is related to his appearance with eleven faces and a thousand arms.
« Because of the great purifying power of this practice, even a being who has done extremely harmful acts, if he does even one Nyung Ne by performing it correctly, is assured of not having to be reborn in the lower states of existence and will progress rapidly on the path of enlightenment. »
How does a Nyung Ne take place?
This practice is organized in a unit that takes place over 48 hours. It begins on the morning of the 1st day at dawn, at 5:30 am and ends on the 3rd day at 9 am. It is a collective practice, specific to the Vajrayana, accomplished in the temple during a large part of the day (approximately 9 hours per day). It consists of the recitation of a text (a sadhana), the recitation of mantras, meditation on a visualization support, prostrations, …
A Nyoung Ne is accompanied by the observation of a partial fast on the 1st day, called Nye Ne, and a total fast on the 2nd day called Nyung Ne (no food or drink for 24 hours associated with the strict observance of silence).
Note: this is not a fast with a » dietetic » aim but an asceticism which is part of the rules of this spiritual tradition of Nyung Ne. During these 48 hours, this practice is completed by taking ethical discipline vows called Sodjong (see details below) which are taken every morning for 24 hours. It is therefore necessary to arrive the day before, to be punctual in the morning for the taking of the vows at 5:30 am, to attend all the sessions and to accomplish the Nyung Ne entirely, without interrupting it.
Nye Ne (partial fasting): people who cannot do a total fast on the second day can do Nye Ne, a partial fast, by having a meal at noon with the possibility of drinking during the day.
How to participate?
It is possible to do the whole retreat, to follow it in part, over several months or weeks, to join it at any time for one or several Nyung Ne. It is imperative to arrive at the beginning of a new Nyung Ne – see the program – arriving the day before, the first session starts at 5:30 am. A Nyung Ne being a unit in itself, it cannot be integrated during a session that has already started.
Warning: before engaging in this practice, it is essential to know if you are motivated to keep the vows you take when you perform Nyung Ne.
About the Eight Nyung Ne
Performing 8 consecutive Nyung Ne called « White Nyung Ne » is considered highly beneficial according to a statement attributed to Chenrezi himself, « He who performs a White Nyung Ne can be certain that at the time of his death he will have no other place to be reborn than in the pure land of Great Blisś, Dewachen. »
Some background about the Nyung Ne in Montchardon …
Traditionally, this practice of Nyung Ne is held in high esteem by our masters, as it is relatively accessible, represents a powerful means of purification and brings very great benefits.
Lama Teunsang has always given it great importance and adopted it as one of the main practices of Karma Migyur Ling. Organized every year since 1982, it has become a specificity of Montchardon. From 1988, Lama Teunsang initiated this practice in the form of a retreat of 100 Nyung Ne taking place over 200 days in a row (about 7 months). This long retreat was then performed every year for thirty years, until 2017 when this practice was structured in retreats of 8 Nyung Ne, spread out several times a year.
Many people participate in this retreat: some commit to the entire retreat, others to more or less long periods ranging from several months to a few days, depending on the choice of each person. The principle is to do Nyoung Ne in units of 48 hours.
Thus, over these many years, a total of 35,000 Nyoung Ne have been performed, in which thousands of people have participated. This is a rare thing: there is almost no other place where such a retreat is organized for 7 months, which shows the importance and the particularitý of this practice made in Montchardon.
In recent years, Lama Teunsang’s wish was to establish this practice on a regular and permanent basis, to establish it on the soil of Montchardon so that it could continue to be performed by future generations. For this reason, a new Nyung Ne temple was built to replace the existing Nyung Ne temple which, although very attractive, had become too small and difficult to access for the public. Lama Teunsang also established́ a Nyung Ne Fund to financially support this practice each year.
